There are houses on our street that still have their Christmas lights up. And not just our street but many others as well. I bet there are in your neck of the woods, too. Bright lights of all colors just blazing away, doing their best to bust through the dark and the snow. Almost shining defiantly as if to say. “You can’t tell me when Christmas is over” or perhaps: “The dark is so dark and we need a little light in our lives”.
I confess that while our inside tree was taken down some time ago our fake tree on our porch is still up. It used to offer a full array of colors to anyone passing by our busy road but the string of color lights has died and now it’s just a few straggly white lights hanging on. And we, like others, are leaving them up. During this season after Epiphany, which is with us for two more weeks and one day, I’m looking at all these lights as a symbol of hope that the light that is Christ is still with us. Still being revealed. In ways we see and can’t see. Still trying to bust through and shine in our lives during times of incredible darkness. Even the few straggly ones.
We need light. We need God’s light. We need hope and a reminder that we are not alone, and the light is still all around us. Even if it’s just a little straggly light.
Maybe we’ll keep our lights up year round. Just as a reminder. Anyone else?
See you in Church,
Linda
