Mission

The Finance Ministry of the New Hampshire Conference, United Church of Christ shall develop the means to strengthen generosity through education and advocacy and steward the assets of the Conference.

How Our Churches' Wider Mission (OCWM) Dollars Are Used

Our Churches' Wider Mission (OCWM) Basic Support is divided: 75% remains in the New Hampshire Conference, and 25% is sent on to support the National Ministries of the United Church of Christ, helping to fund curriculum development, authorization standards, UCC brand identity initiatives, justice and advocacy outreach, ecumenical and interfaith relationship development, and Global Ministries initiatives all over the world.

Here in New Hampshire, the Conference uses OCWM dollars to support our local churches in a variety of ways, including:

  • Search and Call for new pastors: Conference staff provide guidance, counsel, and resources throughout the pastoral search and call process.

  • Ministry 21: a joint program with the Vermont Conference to train lay leaders to meet ministry needs when ordained clergy aren't available.

  • Horton Center: giving over 300 youth and adults each year the chance to deepen their faith, be embraced by a supportive community, and experience the beauty of God's creation, while helping seed future lay and clergy leaders.

  • Consolidated Investment Fund: a faith-based investment opportunity used by over 50 of our local churches.

  • Insurance: For 47 years, the Conference has helped provide leadership for the UCC Insurance Board, which offers our churches insurance products rarely available through private companies.

  • Continuing education and cohort support for clergy: Boundary Awareness Trainings, Clergy Day, Clergy Convocation, and Pastoral Leadership Development Groups all help provide growth and fellowship opportunities for our clergy.

  • Training and resourcing for lay leaders: from Prepared to Serve, offering over 75 workshops, to events like our Administrative Professional Day, we help lay leaders grow in their unique ministries.

  • Local church consultations: Help is available. Conference staff, ministry teams, and mission groups consult with, resource, and support local churches on conflict resolution, bylaws revisions, employment situations, tax-exempt status, planned giving, stewardship resources, parsonage issues, digital ministries, Christian formation resources, and more.

  • Ukama Partnership: For over a quarter century, the New Hampshire Conference has had a covenant partnership with the United Church of Christ in Zimbabwe. Local churches who want to make global partnership more real in their ministry can establish a direct relationship with a church in Zimbabwe.

  • Advocacy and awareness: The Mission Groups of the Justice and Witness Ministry Team give congregations opportunities to raise awareness of and advocate for faith-based concerns, from environmental justice to immigration and refugee support, including through programs like the annual Harriet Ward Anti-Racism Lecture.

  • Ecumenical and interfaith relationships: There are things we can do better together than on our own. The Conference builds and leverages ecumenical and interfaith relationships for our local churches to engage in vital ministry, including through our involvement with the New Hampshire Council of Churches.

  • Grants and loans: Thanks to the faithful stewardship of those who came before us, the Conference offers a variety of grant and loan opportunities in support of our congregations, including Member-in-Discernment Support, Clergy Continuing Education, Lay Leadership Development, Small Church Grants, Youth Ministry Grants, and our Local Church Revolving Loan Fund.

  • Ministerial assistance: The Conference is gifted with invested resources that allow our Prudential Committee to grant emergency assistance in times of need for our active clergy, retired clergy, or clergy widows and widowers.

  • Communications: So our churches can take full advantage of these resources, we share them robustly through the Weekly News, our Facebook page, our YouTube channel, and this website.
