SMITH CHURCH AND THE NEX TREX RECYCLING CHALLENGE
In both 2024 and 2025, Smith Memorial Congregational Church, UCC, in Hillsborough enrolled in the Nex Trex Plastics Recycling Challenge. Participant organizations who collect, sort, weigh and document 1,000 pounds of soft plastic film such as supermarket bags then forward the accumulation to the Trex Company which repurposes it into a sustainable outdoor building material. In 2024, it took Smith Church just 10 months to finish the collection, and in 2025, only five months to accrue the plastic. Participants are then rewarded with a Trex park bench.
Smith Church is pleased to have two such benches on the lawn- currently by the Contoocook River. These benches will be dedicated following the Creation Justice Sunday worship service on September 7th.
